How many of you, since getting your driver’s license, knowingly drive in your car looking at every single building as spaces where careers thrive? How about when you are in a car with someone else driving? Or even when you walk down the street to your favorite café? How many of you ever go into a place of business and feel connected, imagine yourself there but do not pursue the opportunities? How many times have you felt tired of dressing up wishing to simply slide into your favorite pair of jeans, you know the ones you feel your best in? Okay that last one may just apply to me, but stay with me here; I promise I’m making a point.
I love seeing people looking sharp in their suits and professional attire and although I also enjoy a good party and dressing up, I love dress down Friday the most – that is my complete vibe. This does not mean I am not a professional or that I can’t be taken seriously. I know how to dress up yet love dressing down; I just feel so relaxed and comfortable in my jeans, boots, and a sweater. I read once that a CEO made deliberate style choices – of wearing a black turtleneck with a pair of jeans – he spent less time thinking about what he was going to wear and spent time getting things done.
At the end of the day all that matters is why you do what you do. Just like the multiple options presented to you for your choice of fashion styles, do you recognize that everywhere you see a building, a company, or a storefront there are career opportunities and styles to consider? What do you see with your own eyes, what do you feel deep within yourself that feels just right for you? Is there a way you feel with certain places you visit?
Take the time to embrace potential career opportunities, to be present in those moments you feel most like yourself, to study the environments and see if that is a cultural and personal fit. You may not strive to be the president of that company but maybe you want to be a project manager supporting a team of engineers. Maybe you like the entertainment industry, music?
My style feels right for me and whatever you do should feel just as right for you. The way jeans feel perfect for me; I want you to reach the same knowledge, understanding and acceptance of yourself in your career journey. So take the risks, get prepared, understand your career market, keep your eye on the mark and move towards it. It can all come true for you, the things you desire. With time, increased ability to enhance your skills, and putting work into yourself as a whole, there is nothing stopping you from getting all that you seek.
Whatever it is that moves you, just look around the world when you travel from one point to the other, be aware of the prospective careers that lay in wait, and of careers you can create and introduce to the world. Your story can be a success story; it can be one that inspires others to go after their dreams.
Wishing you the absolute best as you find your way, and cheering you on always.
Smiles, Leah
